NPA Welcomes Landmark Insurance Reforms for Female Athletes

The Netball Players Association (NPA) celebrates the landmark insurance reforms for female athletes, highlighted in The Guardian's coverage of the Karen Carney review recommendations. These vital changes close key gaps in coverage for pregnancy, contraception, menopause, and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)—a major win for women's health in sport.
These reforms promise stronger protection for athletes across sports, with netball players standing to benefit directly from support tailored to women's unique needs.
The NPA led Your Quarter female health programme, supported by funding from NFP, is providing vital education to elite netball athletes on many aspects of female specific health matters including RED-S. Following the workshops the players knowledge of RED-S symptoms and its long-term impact has increased significantly from a score of 3.6/10 to 6.8/10 - an impressive 89% uplift – empowering the thrive on and off the court.
England Netball's NSL and Competitions Director, Ian Holloway, shared: “We welcome this commitment to improving female sport insurance products. We've supported this work, and it's exciting to see it drive real action and public momentum. We'll collaborate with insurers to deliver better support for all NSL athletes.”
NPA Player Chair Ella Clark added: “This is a huge step forward for female athletes' wellbeing and careers.” The NPA urges swift implementation to unlock even greater opportunities for women in netball and beyond.
